This is the story of Mary Katherine Wayland and James Lewis Wayland, the two
children of Col. E.C. (Emmett) Wayland and his wife, the former Miss Alice
Melinda Barnette.  The siblings posed for this delightful portrait in November of
1898.  When this photo was taken, Lewis had just celebrated his eleventh
birthday and his little sister Katherine was six years old.

Lewis had been christened James Lewis Wayland and Katherine had been
christened Mary Catherine Wayland.   Both children always went by their middle
names. Over and over among the different branches of the Weyland family,
variations have often occurred in the spelling of the names "Louis", "Catherine"
and even in the name "Weyland" itself.
